Scott Pilgrim's life is so effin' awesome. He's the bass guitarist for a totally mediocre garage band, he's "between jobs" at the moment and he's got himself a cute high school girl.
Everything's fine and dandy until a rollerblading delivery girl named Ramona Flowers starts cruising through his dreams and turning his precious little life upside-down.
The girl of his dreams (quite literally) isn't an easy catch. Ramona's seven evil exes stand between Scott and true happiness. It's ''Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World,'' based on the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O'Malley; a no-holds-barred, geeks-in-love story filled with enough comic book and video game references to make even the most hardcore gamer feel like a total n00b.
''Scott Pilgrim'' is director Edgar Wright's first big-budget film, but don't let that fool you - the guy has enough nerd cred built-up to run for mayor of all Geekdom. From the cult television series, ''Spaced'', to hits like ''Shaun of the Dead'' and ''Hot Fuzz'', Wright knows a thing or two about telling an entertaining story in an inventive way.
''Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World'' is no exception, as Wright manages to capture the essence of O'Malley's graphic novel with a Super Nintendo-inspired credit sequence, complete with a MIDI version of the Universal theme. From the get-go, it's a deliriously epic swirl of light and sound - a living, breathing video game.
Michael Cera plays the awkward, coming of age kid who has problems with girls - the same character he's played since his ''Arrested Development'' days, but in his defense... isn't that why we liked the kid in the first place? [No on seems to mind the fact that Bill Murray and Will Ferrell have made entire careers out of playing the same character...]
